Education plays a significant role within our lives from infancy through to adulthood. It is therefore important that we create comfortable, inclusive learning environments, as they play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of students and staff.
High quality lighting has the ability to enhance visual communication, help lower stress levels and aid student performance, enabling students to be nurtured to their full potential.
Education requires a carefully considered lighting scheme to take into account the correct lux levels, glare control, uniformity of the light and the correct use of colour temperature. Lighting for the education sector should be designed in line with LG5 criteria Illimunaince levels (lux level=measured amount of light in a space). Designing the space with the correct amount of light can have a positive effect on student performance, concentration and behaviour.
Too low lux level leads to reduced concentration and poor posture. Too high lux level results in discomfort, hyperactivity and impaired visual performance.
Old lighting technology can cause a strobing effect which can go undetected by the eye, this is uncomfortable to sit in.
Glare and uniformity of the light are equally as important as the lux level. Ensuring students can sit comfortably in the classroom environment, without the impact of glare on the boards, screen or reading material.
Can change the feel and atmosphere of the room, which can impact mood and concentration.
