Supercharging the way to the UK’s post-pandemic recovery through Green Investment- How your business can benefit from the new Super deduction tax announced in the latest budget

The Government’s new Super-deduction tax scheme

Coming into operation on the 1 April 2021, the Government’s new Super-deduction tax scheme enables businesses to claim 130% capital allowances on qualifying plant and machinery investments, up until the end of March 2023. This is expenditure that ordinarily would have been relieved at the main rate writing down allowance of 18%, whilst the special rate writing down allowance was 6%.

According to Gov.uk, under this super deduction, for every pound a company invests, their taxes are cut by up to 25p, making the new capital allowance regime the most internationally competitive allowance scheme amongst OECD member countries.

This uplift applied means that you receive a tax deduction of £130k for every £100k spent on qualified capital, giving corporation tax relief at 19% on £130,000, which is £24,700.

Qualifying plant and machinery assets include LED lighting, Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging points, Solar Panels and more.

If you are looking for some additional guidance and information on which assets qualify for the Super-deduction capital expenditure relief, HM treasury have created a useful Super-deduction policy factsheet.
